Neighbours Day this year was on 26 March 2016 the weather was not the best but the community did come and share this day with us.
There were various activities going on, kapa haka, mau rakau, face painting and more.
The day was opened by Joe McLeod (Assistant Chairperson) followed by brief speeches from the Peter Dunne (MP for Ohariu) and Greg O'Connor (Labour candidate for Ohariu).
Our mau rākau whānau, who hosted a taiaha wānanga late July 2016, also gave a brief demonstration following the Marae kapa haka performance. The taiaha style they carry hails from Mita Mohi, from Awahau, Rotorua. Although he recently passed away many of us continue to hold fast and share the tikanga and learnings he and his whānau gave to us on Mokoia Island. Moe mai e te tangata rongonui.
To train in our style on a weekly basis requires candidates to complete a "Dawn" - that is, a weekend wānanga which is due to be hosted this coming mid year.
All in all it was a great day, thanks to those who attended we hope you enjoyed the day.
